Two trips to New York in 2023, one at either end of the year.
February was grey and cold, and the highlight was Ellis Island. The Hard Hat tour takes you into the island’s abandoned hospital, where immigrants who arrived sick were treated. The laundry machines are still in place, the corridors are peeling, the wards are tiled and empty, and JR’s Unframed faces of immigrants are pasted across the windows. The Statue of Liberty was across the water. In between there was the Oculus, the High Line, the Brooklyn Bridge lit up at night, and Lower Manhattan and the bridges from high above.
November was Thanksgiving week, with the city in its autumn colours. Battery Park and the High Line were full of red and gold, and the Stock Exchange’s Christmas tree arrived on the back of a truck. On Wall St the flags were out. We watched the sun set over the skyline from an observation deck and saw the New Yorker’s sign from above. Then came DUMBO, with the Manhattan Bridge framed between the warehouses and the Brooklyn Bridge through a brick arch, a walk back over the Brooklyn Bridge in the rain, Grand Central’s light, and the Chrysler Building at the end of 42nd Street.
On the Sony A7R V and the iPhone.
